Why the Gilmores Means So Much

I'm pretty sure that you're all aware of the fact that Gilmore Girls is now on Netflix, unless of course you've been living under a rock. Before Netflix, I remember the summers where I would wait patiently for 2 o'clock to roll around so I could watch that day's episode and live vicariously through Lorelai and Rory. They were fun, hilarious, and they lived their lives the way they pleased. When I grew up, they were who I wanted to be.
When Gilmore Girls first appeared on Netflix, I binged and I am still trying to balance school and watching Gilmore Girls. Why do I love and care about them so much? Because I grew up and my dream came true; I am (or like to think I am) as close to being Rory and Lorelai as possible.  Watching the show now is completely strange because of the fact that I developed a similar humor to the Gilmore's and because my dream job was Rory's dream job. This show had an obvious influence on me despite the fact that I hadn't seen an episode since middle school.
Despite the obvious effect that they had on me, I think that they can teach young girls wonderful things about life. This is what they taught me and what I hope to pass on to all the young women in my life:
  1. Eat what you want, no matter what anyone says. Lorelai and Rory are notorious for their obscene appetites. People constantly poke fun at the fact that their diet consists mostly of pancakes, burgers, and coffee and they always write them off. Why? Because they understand that life is too short to watch what you eat. They may be blessed with obnoxiously fast metabolisms, but I'm positive they would still eat what they want no matter how much they weighed.
  2. Don't let your current circumstances ruin who you are and who you want to be. Lorelai had Rory and sixteen, but she didn't let that (or and overbearing mother) stop her. She got a job as a maid and she worked hard until she ran the place. She never regretted Rory and she never let her circumstance bring her down. She built a great life with what she had, and I think we should all have that mentality.
  3. Family means more than boys. Sometimes Rory and Lorelai's relationship seemed a little bit unrealistic, but the fact that they were more important to each other than anyone else is a great example. Family should always come first, no matter how cute that boy is.
  4. Don't be too proud to ask for money, but don't do it often. Lorelai had a lot of trouble with asking her parents for financial help with Rory, but it always ended up for the best. One thing is for sure, she knew that it was not something you should do often or something to get used to.
  5. You should never be scared to change your plans, especially if it's the best thing for you. SPOILER ALERT! Rory didn't pick Harvard or Dean, and Lorelai didn't marry Max. They both made very scary and difficult decisions, but it all worked out in the end.

Start binge watching now. You will not regret it.
